SOS Split Pea Soup is a sugar, oil and salt-free recipe that has become a staple in my family’s weekly menu. It’s fall and the craving for soup is REAL! This comforting Split Pea Soup is made with only 6 ingredients, in one pot for easy clean-up. I love to serve this over rice but my family also likes it poured over a baked potato or with some toast to dip. I adapted this recipe from my mother-in-law (who stovetop cooks it) and I always find her’s tastes even better. Perhaps stove-top cooking brings out the flavour more but sometimes you gotta get dinner on the table right? Hello Instant pot!
SOS Spit Pea Soup 6 Ingredients
1. Chop up 1 onion, 2-3 cloves of garlic, 4 carrots and 4 celery.
How to Sauté without OIL?
It’s easy! Just use a bit of water and stir until all the veggies soften. Sauté onions, garlic, carrots and celery in the Instant Pot or on your stove.
2. Cut up 1 sweet potato.
3. Add in 2 cups of Split Peas and Sweet Potato along with 6 cups of water.
CELIAC CROSS-CONTAMINATION WARNING! Make sure your split peas are Gluten Free. Many legumes have cross-contamination warning labels on them which is usually in fine print; “the product is processed with wheat ingredients”. This is not safe for a person with Celiac Disease.
I prefer brands like Clic which have the blue Canadian Celiac Association Stamp of approval. This means the product has been tested by a third party for under 20 parts per million (ppm). Always rinse your legumes throughly too.
Instant Pot or Stovetop Method
If you are using an Instant Pot:
- Select grains/beans on Instant pot.
- Let the pressure release naturally for 20 minutes.
- Move the Pressure Release to ‘Venting’ to release any remaining steam.
- Use immersion blender if you prefer creamier soups or use your masher tool.
If you are using the stovetop:
- Cover pot and bring to a boil.
- Reduce to simmer for 1 hour.
- Use immersion blender/masher tool to make the soup creamier.
I really love to use my immersion blender not only to make the soup creamier but my kids can’t tell which vegetables are in the soup which is great! HA!
Voila! Serve with some bread, perhaps over rice, potatoes maybe even over quinoa. SOS Split Pea Soup is kid approved however, my boys do add salt. If there is leftovers, my 10 year old requests this for his lunch, even my little picky eater scoffs this off. Hopefully it will be a hit in your house. For dessert check out this chocolate cake recipe or carrot cake muffins.
