I may be a little late to the game in 2022 of DIY plant hanger macrame but I always thought it looked way too hard for me. All those knots and strings!? Yikes! I felt like I would make a huge mess all tangled up in a pathetic attempt.
My mom’s birthday was coming up and she was talking about a plant she needed a hanger for and BAM! I jumped on the opportunity to try and make her one. She liked how macrame’s are back in style again after she had spent the 70’s making them but can’t remember how. I hope you find this project fun and simple. Supply List
All you need is some rope/twine and scissors! I do not recommend using the cord featured in my photos. It is a type of jute and as you can see in the photos it sheds threads everywhere! Although it does make for a more rustic look if your into that. For my next macrame project I will use this macrame cord you can find it on amazon.
- 6 X 280 cm length cord
- 2 X 50 cm length cord
- 1 X 100 cm length cord
7 Simple Steps for DIY Macrame Plant Hanger
Step 1
Organize your 6 X 100 cm strings so they line up evenly and fold in half.
Optional: Place some scotch tape 2 inches down from the centre of 6 strings.
I put my laptop down on the rope to hold it steady.
Use 1 X 100 cm cord and place it in the middle.
1st Knot to Learn DIY Macrame Plant Hanger : A Square Macrame Knot
Use 1 X 100 cm rope.
Tie Square Knots until all of the 100 cm rope is used up.
Fold in half. This will be the hanger part of your macrame.
Step 2
2nd Knot to Learn DIY Macrame Plant Hanger : A Macrame Gathering Knot
Tie a Gathering knot with a 1 X 50 cm rope around the bottom of your square knots.
Make a U shape with your rope, leaving an upward tail.
Wrap it around 5 or 6 times leaving a little loop.
Take your rope end and feed it through the loop.
Pull up on the upward tail and watch as your loop disappears underneath.
Snip off any loose ends with scissors.
It should hopefully look something like this.
Step 3
Split into 3 groups of four cords
I place the top under my laptop to hold it steady.
Begin with the 4 cords in the centre and measure 12 cm down from gathering knot.
Make 6 square knots just like before.
Repeat with your other cord groups at 12 cm length.
Step 4
Measure 8 cm down from your last square knots.
3rd Knot to Learn DIY Macrame Plant Hanger : A Macrame Standard Knot
Tie a standard knot. Separate 4 strings.
4th Knot to Learn DIY Macrame Plant Hanger : A Macrame Spiral Knot
Continue making spiral knots until 10 cm down. Your knots should go in a spiral shape.
Make another standard knot.
Continue on your other 2 groups. Should have 3 ropes in total.
Step 5
You may find it easier to hang up your macrame. Pick out 2 strings from each group that are closest to each other.
Measure 12 cm down.
Tie 2 square knots.
Go around taking 2 more from each group tying 2 square knots. Should have 3 in total.
Step 6
Pick out 2 more strings from each group that are closest to each other (4 in total).
Measure 5 cm down.
Tie 2 square knots.
Continue taking 2 more strings from each group and tying 2 square knots.
Now you can see where your plant will sit.
Use your last 1 X 50 cm cord.
Measure 5 cm down.
Trim up excess string at the bottom or leave it depending on the look.
And Voila! You did it! I hope you love your macrame plant holder as much as I do! It made a great birthday gift to my mom. Perfect for her Spider plant.
I tried my Money plant in it too! I think it suits plants that have more ‘hangy’ foliage? What do you think? Feel free to leave a comment below.
