This Coconut Soap Gift idea is perfect if you are looking for a baby shower party favour people will actually use? Or maybe need a Christmas gift giving idea? Check out this 3 ingredient coconut soap totally beginner friendly.

I have an obsession with pretty soap. My two boys have a habit of covering my pretty soap in mud or leaving them in puddles of water. But hey, at least they are using it! When I looked into making my own soap for my sister-in-laws baby shower I was a little intimidated until I found Elly’s Everyday Soap Making Videos and her simple formula made me want to try it.

Let’s Make Some Soap

1. Get your Digital Scale out. Measure 234 grams of water in a plastic container.

2. Measure 115 grams of Sodium Hydroxide into a separate plastic container.

3.  Slowly add the Sodium Hydroxide to the water, stirring frequently. You need to be careful not to burn yourself. It gets hot! Set aside while you prepare the coconut oil.

4.  Measure out 840 grams of coconut oil. Stick in the microwave until just melted.

5.  Slowly pour Sodium Hydroxide and water mixture into the melted Coconut Oil. Begin to stir with whatever mixing apparatus you like (stick blender/whisk/manual hand mixer). Stir, Stir, STIR…until the liquid begins to TRACE. Meaning the texture changes to creamy and the colour becomes lighter. When you lift your stirring apparatus you notice the drips leave slight impressions on the top before disappearing. If you are using the stick blender it will happens within minutes. When using a whisk or manual hand mixer it will take a bit longer approximately 10 minutes. Don’t stress too much after 10 minutes you should notice a change of thickness and creaminess.

6.  Ready to pour into your soap mold. I used an old soy milk container. Whatever mold you go with make sure it can hold 1.2 Litres.

Optional: Add Dried Flowers/Colour To Your Soap

If you want your soap to have pink swirly’s you need Pink French Clay.

  • save approximately 1/4 of your soap batter
  • Add in a couple of tablespoons of Pink French Clay
  • Stir until it is fully incorporated. Your soap batter should now have a pink hue.
  • Pour the pink batter into your soap mold. With a stainless steel spoon, slightly mix the pink batter making a marbled effect. (Next time I would experiment with waiting for the soap batter to thicken a bit before adding)
French pink clay and dried rose petals

Optional dried flowers on top.

Cover Soap mold with an old tea towel and let rest until the next day.

Clean Up Tips

If you are anything like me, I just jump right into a project sometimes without thinking things through. After I made this soap I realized all of the materials I just used had caustic chemicals on them that could potentially destroy my plumbing! How to clean up this mess? Easy! Put everything you used into a garbage bag and leave it to sit for a day. The chemicals will saponify in 24 hours and they will be safer to handle. After 24 hours I wash everything by hand or throw it in my dishwasher.
